Northwest 34, Emporia State 23

Northwest Missouri State University scored the final 15 points of the game and shut Emporia State out in the fourth quarter on the way to a 34-23 win Saturday afternoon in Emporia, Kansas.

The win is the 27th straight for the Bearcats (5-0) over the Hornets (2-3).

Emporia opened the scoring with a touchdown on their first drive of the game, and later tacked on a field goal to hang onto the lead over Northwest throughout the first quarter.

The 'Cats got on the board when Spencer Phillips tackled Emporia's Carlos Grace in the end zone for a safety to cut the deficit to 7-2. Parker Sampson also hit a field goal in the opening quarter to keep Northwest within five at 10-5 entering the second quarter.

The Bearcats took their first lead of the game, 12-10, on a two-yard touchdown run by Mike Hohensee with 7:19 to go in the first half.

The Hornets answered with a touchdown run by Grace to go into halftime with a 17-12 lead.

Northwest came out strong to start the second half, though. Braden Wright found Imoni Donadelle down the right sideline for a 57-yard touchdown pass less than a minute into the third quarter.

The Bearcats' 19-17 lead would hold for four minutes until Emporia marched down the field and punched it in for six. The lead would remain at just 23-19 after a blocked extra point attempt.

From that point on, the Bearcats took control.

Hohensee hit Marqus Andrews for a three-yard touchdown pass that put Northwest in front 25-23 with 7:12 remaining in the third quarter.

In the final 22 minutes of the game, the Bearcat defense allowed just five total yards and one first down on six Emporia State possessions.

Parker Sampson finished out the fourth quarter nailing three more field goals, including a career-long 53-yarder to put the game away.

Donadelle finished the game with 63 yards and a touchdown on three receptions.

As a team, Northwest outrushed Emporia 177-58, and the 'Cats controlled the football for more than 34 minutes in the game.

The Bearcats now move on to face Pittsburg State at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday, October 12 at noon.
