JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - With Thanksgiving this week, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is urging drivers to prioritize safety during holiday travel.
With heavy traffic expected, particularly the day before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after, Mo-DOT reminds motorists to stay cautious, patient, and vigilant.
Key concerns include impaired driving, speeding, and distractions, especially during Blackout Wednesday, a popular night for bar outings.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 53 people died in crashes during Thanksgiving holiday periods between 2019 and 2023.
To reduce risks, MoDOT advises drivers to buckle up, avoid distractions like cell phones, obey speed limits, and never drive under the influence.
MoDOT is also promoting sober ride options and asking friends to intervene if someone attempts to drink and drive.
