DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa’s gun deer hunting seasons are just around the corner, with the first season running December 7-11 and the second December 14-22.
Before heading out, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging hunters to check their gear, sight in their firearms, and prioritize safety.
The DNR emphasizes the importance of wearing blaze orange. Iowa law requires a 100 percent solid blaze orange vest, but hunters are encouraged to wear more for visibility.
With more hunters opting for rifles, which can travel greater distances, the DNR advises avoiding shots at running deer and ensuring there’s a clear backdrop behind the target.
Over the past three seasons, rifle-related hunting incidents have averaged nine annually, with six involving injuries. Hunters are also encouraged to create and stick to a hunting plan.
This includes outlining roles, locations, and a return time, and leaving the plan with someone in case of emergencies.
